song six: psalm 100 (shout for joy)

I (Noah) wrote this song during our three-month stay in Jerusalem in 2014. Most mornings I would get up before sunrise, climb up the stairs to the rooftop terrace with my Bible and guitar, and sing songs to the Lord as the sun came up over the Mount of Olives. We were staying close to where archaeologists were unearthing the remains to King David's palace. It was mind-blowing to imagine that King David may have been standing on that very spot, watching this same sunrise over the same mount when he wrote his psalms 3000 years ago!

Scripture is probably my greatest source of song inspiration. Often when reading the Bible (especially poetic books like Psalms or Isaiah), a verse will pop out and come alive with a rhythm or melody to go with the words. I'll run with it and it becomes a song. In this case, the lyrics are pretty much word-for-word straight outta Psalm 100. The psalms of the Bible were originally songs that were sung by the ancient Hebrews, many of them written by David. I often wonder what David's original melodies sounded like…?

Psalm 100 is subtitled "A psalm for giving thanks". You can never go wrong with being grateful. Thankfulness is the antidote to fear and anxiety. Thankfulness focuses our attention on what we have instead of worrying about what we don't have. Thankfulness is living life from a place of fullness instead of a place of lack. Praise takes our minds off of ourselves and puts the attention on the Giver of all good things. My favorite line from this psalm is “Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise.” When we choose thankfulness and praise, the gates of the kingdom of heaven open up before us!

This morning Moses and I went out before sunrise to sing the sun up, and as we sang this song the bridge was born (“we’ll sing your praises…”). It has long been my dream to record and release music into the wild while it is still fresh, and I am very thankful to be able to share my heart and my music with all of you…

Love,
noah.

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth
Worship the Lord with gladness
Come before Him with joyful song
Know that the Lord is God

Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise
Give thanks to Him and praise His name
For the Lord is good, and His love endures forever
His faithfulness is never gonna end

Enter His gates with thanksgiving, and His courts with praise
Give thanks to Him and praise His name
For the Lord is good, and His love endures forever
His faithfulness continues through all generations

We'll sing Your praises all our days
We'll sing of Your goodness, God
We'll sing Your praises all our days
We'll sing of Your love, oh Lord
