song nine: holder of it all

in the Spring of 2017, Noah and i took a songwriting class together at school — and collaborated on a song for the first time EVER! Noah has created music with many amazing musicians for many years, so it came so naturally for him... but it was completely nerve wracking for me, for sure. music has always drawn us to each other, and we've contributed to each other's songs since we were married, but we'd never actually worked together to write a song before. in hindsight, it's a little weird that it took us 10 years to break the seal, but we're doing it now so hooray!

for the class, we were in a songwriting group with three amazing girls, and had three group writing sessions together to write a corporate worship song. Noah and I also had a few sessions together on the side, since Moses and I were crazy sick for weeks and couldn't even make it out of the house to meet up with the others... and we ended up having some major breakthrough in learning how to create together. it was amazing! and shortly thereafter we got the idea for our little 50/50 experiment, and now here we are... recording together weekly is definitely forcing us to let go of perfectionism and expose our process much more readily, whether it feels comfortable or not. and in case you're wondering, it doesn't! but we're growing and getting better at it, and having fun to boot.

the song itself for this week is rooted in Psalm 46 and Colossians 1:17 — God is our refuge and strength, and ever-present help in trouble. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. that's good news for times likes these, right?

lyrics by Julie Jane, Noah Star Weaver, Natasha Van Bibber, Rebekah Beaver, Emily Larocque

before time began You reached out Your hand
You breathed life into our being
You sang over us our deliverance
with all we are we sing

You are before all things
in You we live and move and have our being
our Coming King
You are the holder of it all

every mountain quakes, all creation waits
nations rage, kingdoms fall
though the earth give way we won't be afraid
You're the holder of it all

You are before all things...

and on that day You come again
we will see You as You are
and we will be, be made like Him
the Bright and Morning Star

You are before all things...
