song 41: hunnybee

Seattle in the summertime!! it feels so good to be back in our homeland. we drove north last week to spend a couple weeks in Washington, seeing friends and family, getting some time in the mountains, and taking care of a few things. one of our primary missions for this trip is to deal with all of our belongings that have been sitting in a shipping container in Marblemount for the past few years. sorting through all of our keepsakes and memorabilia has been quite a trip down memory lane. earlier today, julie jane happened to come across a paper with the lyrics to this song that i wrote during the early days of our relationship. at the top, it was addressed “to my love”, and at the bottom were three hearts and “jj”…

song 40: my son

tonight as our son Moses Star was going to sleep, we all three lay in our big loft bed under the open skylight, the summer sun going down behind the mountains. i turned this song on quietly and began transcribing the lyrics and thinking about what to write about it. as the song played, i felt Moses cuddle in closer to me. he buried his face into my side, and i noticed muffled sobs as he listened to the voice of his Baba sing this love song for him. i put down the laptop and held him close as his tears spilled onto my bare chest…

song 39: magnolia + when you smile

i think our last installment in the relationship saga left off somewhere in japan in mid-april on the outs? but back in seattle the dance parties just kept coming and honestly it’s extra hard to stay mad when you’re dancing. fast forward to june, when “magnolia” happened. i recorded it at Phil Peterson’s studio (House of Breaking Glass) in july of 2005, and handed Noah a CD to listen to on the plane on his way back to japan. he returned to me with rave reviews and declared that it was “epic” — clearly he was tuning out the part where i was super pissed off (at him), if that’s even possible?! it’s funny now, but at the time, it didn’t go over well…

song 36: day of my salvation

Twelve years ago today, I had an unexpected encounter with Christ that changed my life forever. I had grown up going to church, youth group, and attended a Christian college in Seattle. After college, however, I grew disillusioned with church and religion, and set out on a quest to find truth for myself. I spent much of my 20’s exploring other spiritual paths, philosophies, religions, paths to enlightenment, states of mind… I never doubted the existence a divine power, but from what I’d experienced, I felt like Christianity was the last place I was going to find God…

song 28: come away

eleven years ago today, Noah and i exchanged vows... in the moonlight, in the woods, in the middle of nowhere. he drove me out to the sticks and showed me from whence he came, and suddenly everything mysterious and mystical about him made perfect sense. our friend Robin always said he was a mythical creature... a unicorn, really. so he took me out to Marblemount, and showed me the remnants of the old hippie commune where his parents met and fell in love, where he was born and raised, and where he lived until he ventured out into the big city of Seattle at the age of 18 to go to college. we spent the day wandering in the forest, remembering the past, and dreaming about the future...

song 27: i am convinced

in honor of studying the book of Romans at school, and of our homework assignment due in a few hours, we are offering this week's song with little explanation, other than it being straight out of Romans 8, and it being one of the first songs noah wrote from the Word...

song 26: i'm like a fountain

this morning Noah and i both woke up with this little ditty in our heads, and felt like it should be today's sunday song. Noah recently rediscovered this gem from February 2017 in a voice memo on his phone. apparently Moses had come up with all the words and had the first spark of an idea for the melody, which Noah ran with...

song 25: house of cards

well a few of you already know, but i (julie jane) started a half-time job about a month ago. i’ve been brought to tears numerous times while talking with noah about how happy i am there, and how incredible the people are that i get to work with! i have never been in a position where i was able to use my gifts in a context that i was personally passionate about. i mean, home networking and car insurance are both completely necessary, but they don’t exactly move me, if you know what i’m saying...

song 23: big love

this week we doctored up a rough demo i recorded (through tears!) back in may of 2006. in a world where really talking with each other was seemingly impossible, i was well aware that the only way my man was going to hear me was if i was singing. so i wrote him big love, but we broke up a day or two later, song unsung. but when i spied Noah in the audience during a show at the Crocodile in seattle a mere week post-breakup, i added big love to end of my set and nervously sang my heart out, regretting my decision to play it from the first strum to the last! that night literally changed our lives...

song 21: watchmen wait

Noah is flying solo on the banjo this week, as Moses is still on the mend and i've been super sick in bed all weekend. he wrote this song back in august, one morning when he was out "singing the sun up" in the field next to our tiny house. he wrote the entire thing, based on Psalm 130, in about 20 minutes...
