song 24: your beautiful

as we'll have family in town for the weekend, we are opting to send out this sunday's song early, for valentine's day! tonight Moses surprised me with my valentine's day gift: a love song called, "your beautiful!" we decided to record it while he was singing it for me, and since he nailed it, we're making it our next song...

song 23: big love

this week we doctored up a rough demo i recorded (through tears!) back in may of 2006. in a world where really talking with each other was seemingly impossible, i was well aware that the only way my man was going to hear me was if i was singing. so i wrote him big love, but we broke up a day or two later, song unsung. but when i spied Noah in the audience during a show at the Crocodile in seattle a mere week post-breakup, i added big love to end of my set and nervously sang my heart out, regretting my decision to play it from the first strum to the last! that night literally changed our lives...

song 21: watchmen wait

Noah is flying solo on the banjo this week, as Moses is still on the mend and i've been super sick in bed all weekend. he wrote this song back in august, one morning when he was out "singing the sun up" in the field next to our tiny house. he wrote the entire thing, based on Psalm 130, in about 20 minutes...

song 18: spider ninjas!

this week's song is Moses' latest super hero theme song installment, entitled super sprinter spider ninjas... also referred to as S.S.S.N. or just plain old spider ninjas, for short. he wrote it while Noah was in Zimbabwe last spring, and every time we'd go somewhere, Moses would sit in his carseat with his little vintage Yamaha battery operated keyboard and practice, practice, practice...

song 16: i'm Your Mary

we had planned for weeks on recording a peppy Christmas tune Noah has been working for our Sunday song this week, but as he was playing it for me two days ago, he struck the first chord and i heard something else entirely... so here's a little song hot off the press! i finished writing it on Christmas Eve a few hours ago, and now at 1:30am we are about to record what i refer to as a scratch track = not for reals, just for reference...

song 14: your Light has come

Well we'll save the big announcement til the end. This week's song dates back to a time when little Moses was in my belly, but we did not yet know it was so. Noah felt inspired to write a lullaby, and drew on verses from the book of Isaiah, chapters 60 and 61. We started recording this song back in the fall of 2014, and Moses' vocals were recorded on his 3rd birthday, in mid-October. It's been so fun finishing up some of our half-baked songs... remembering the way we were while finally stepping into what we could have been all along. This is such a sweet time of connection and creativity...

song 11: the official march

this week's song is entitled "the official march" and Moses says, "it's like a battalion of soldiers holding flags, ready for a parade!" we honor and appreciate those who've devoted their lives to making peace, keeping peace, and fighting for our freedom. so for all our veteran family and friends, bless you! thank you for your faithful service and your willingness to sacrifice to secure and maintain the many freedoms we all enjoy...

song ten: awake!

Noah wrote this song towards the end of our time in Jerusalem back in 2014... i think the first time we sang it was the last time we led worship there. it's based on Isaiah 44 and 52 and really captures our heart for bringing joy and hope to Jerusalem! and oh how we are longing to return...

song nine: holder of it all

in the Spring of 2017, Noah and i took a songwriting class together at school — and collaborated on a song for the first time EVER! Noah has created music with many amazing musicians for many years, it came so naturally for him... but it was completely nerve wracking for me, for sure. music has always drawn us to each other, and we've contributed to each other's songs since we were married, but we'd never actually worked together to write a song before. in hindsight, it's a little weird that it took us 10 years to break the seal, but we're doing it now so hooray!

song eight: you was my baby

in december 2015 Noah woke up from a dream with the first line of this song in his head... exact words, exact melody, exact timing. he laid awake a long time and wrote the rest of the song in his head while Moses and i slept, the three of us all cuddled up in bed together. the days may seem long, but the years fly by...
